Place Introduction

Seongguksa Temple is a branch temple of Geumsansa Temple, the headquarters of the 17th parish of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order, located in Gyoryongsanseong Fortress, 419 Sangok-dong, Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do. Gyoryongsan Mountain is famous because it has Gyoryongsanseong Fortress in it. Gyoryongsanseong Fortress is the best preserved fortress among the 20 fortresses in Namwon, and it is said that it was first built against Silla during the Baekje period. In addition, General Lee Seong-gye fought against Japanese pirates at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty, and during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, Seungjang Cheoyoung contracted greatly. On the other hand, during the Donghak Revolution, it is also a historical site where the peasant army led by the leader Kim Gae-nam fought a big battle with the government army.

Just as most of the temples that contain the word "guk" in the name of the temple have played a big role for the country, Seonguksa Temple also has a history of suffering that protected the country. When the country was in crisis, Gunnyangmi collected from six counties and prefectures in the Honam region was stored in Gyoryongsanseong Fortress, where Seongguksa Temple served as the headquarters of a garrison protecting Gyoryongsanseong Fortress. Perhaps that's why, in its heyday, it was said that it had the appearance of 300 monks staying. The copper seal, discovered in Bojeru in 1960, was sent down from the court to Seunggun, who guarded the fortress, and it can be assumed that Gyoryongsanseong Fortress and Seongguksa Temple were also considered important in the country.

Seonguksa Temple has shared the rise and fall of history at the site of this history, serving as an illegal practice at ordinary times and a defensive position during wartime. However, now, with all the worries left behind, a quiet place is sitting alone in a deserted deep forest along with a collapsed wall. Bojeru Pavilion, like a large drum and a white bone hanging in Daeungjeon Hall, remains a symbol of the fierce times and welcomes visitors.
