Place Introduction

Namwon, the northwestern gateway to Jirisan Mountain, has been an important political and military base since ancient times. Namwon is also the most widely known stage of Chunhyangjeon in our classical literature. The Chinese short story of Maeoldang Kim Si-seup, Manboksa Temple Jeobugo, is also set in Namwon. Located under Gyoryongsan Mountain (520m) in the northwest of downtown Namwon, Gyoryongsan National Tourist Site (9,680 pyeong) plays a pivotal role in Namwon tourism along with the Namwon Tourist Complex. It is one of the national resorts based on the natural scenery including Gyoryongsanseong Fortress and Seongguksa Temple. It has various sports facilities and outdoor folk exhibition halls to serve as a national tourist destination, and the monument of Kim Samuidang, a female poet of the Joseon Dynasty born by Namwon, was established by the Namwon Cultural Center in 1991. In addition, Gyoryongsanseong Fortress is said to have preserved its shape the best among the 20 fortresses in Namwon, and it was first built against Silla during the Baekje period. In late Goryeo, General Lee Seong-gye fought against Japanese pirates and the Seungbyeongjang Cheoyeong contracted greatly during the Japanese Invasion of Korea.
